Rian Johnson on Thinking Outside of the Genre Box and Staying Loyal to Celluloid

ICG Magazine talks to Looper director Rian Johnson about switching up genres, his fruitful relationship with longtime cinematographer Steve Yedlin, and his loyalty to celluloid.

Says Johnson, "[My films] have all been very different in tone, type of story and visual requirements. I think too often filmmakers, especially writer/directors who are considered to have a ‘voice,’ are thought to have a specific fixed visual approach, almost like it’s a suit they wear. Inevitably there are going to be similarities from film to film, but those are probably unconscious ones. I try to tailor visuals to the specific needs of each story. With Brick it was one thing, The Brothers Bloom was quite different and very specific in its differences, and Looper is a thing apart from both of them. There is no visual affectation I choose to bring to the work."
