They kill rats but not little children

I DISAGREE strongly with Tim Stanley's diatribe against foxes. Children are unlikely to be at risk from a wily but timid wild creature. However, at least three toddlers have been killed by domestic dogs in recent years.

It is true a few foxes have entered houses and have reacted from fear but have not caused serious injury. Foxes kill rats not small children.

The real menace is the cult of keeping certain breeds of dogs in order to appear 'tough'. Recently I was menaced by such a 'pit bull' canine which although on a leash had apparently been trained to attack. Had it slipped its collar I would certainly have suffered a serious injury. I was unable to use the pavement until it had, on request, been led away. It should have been muzzled, of course.

We are part of the natural world and so are foxes.

IT is quite obvious from your letter Mr Stanley that most people do not agree with your opinion on foxes.

Fox attacks on people are very rare. Dogs of uncaring owners are a much bigger danger. Given a chance a fox will enter an unguarded property, likewise a burglar who will cause more damage.

Also a fox is a scavenger by nature and helps to control the rat population. Have you ever though about the hazards which animals face. For example litter, plastic bags, broken cans and glass, chemicals. What about trigger happy people who shoot simply to maim an animals.

As for diseased foxes in your area, there are some societies who will assist in treating these curable diseases in foxes.
